Eastry

The church of St Mary the Virgin
Cottages adjoining the manor house
The village of Eastry lies on the top of a hill on the old road from Dover to Sandwich.  Since the building of the bypass, the village has become much quieter.  The old part of the village is centred around the church and the old manor house, with picturesque cottages and narrow streets.

Until fairly recently there were three public houses within 150 yards of the church; one of them - "The Plough" - has been converted into offices but the other two - "The Five Bells" and "The Bull" - are still open for business.

The Eastry Union (workhouse) - for many years the Eastry Hospital and home to a large number of mental patients - has now closed down and is up for sale for re-development.  Some of the buildings have been listed as being of historical importance, so the site will have to be treated carefully.
